Bogota, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi and friends will present their annual Holiday Gala Fundraising Concert on Friday, December 16 – 7:30 PM at Lambert Castle Museum, 3 Valley Road in Paterson, New Jersey.
Special guests will be the Pascack Valley High School Chamber Choir, directed by Argine Safari, PV Board Treasurer and Music Director at Pascack Valley High School.
The program will feature the World Premiere of In the Spotlight, composed for The Virtuosi by William Vollinger, with the composer as narrator, Chanuka (Variations on Maoz Tzur) by Henry Pool, transcribed for PV by the composer, and a selection of Holiday favorites.
Tickets for the December 16 event are $35 per person. Admission includes a post-concert Meet the Artist reception. Seating is limited, so advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended. PALISADES VIRTUOSI NAMES
2011 YOUNG ARTIST RECOGNITION AWARD WINNERFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Palisades Virtuosi has named its 2011 Young Artist Recognition Award winner. Alexandra Urquiola, voice, a student at Bergen County Academies was chosen as this year’s recipient. The award is given to a High School music student in Bergen County each year who displays not only exceptional musical abilities but who also exhibits great leadership skills among his or her peers. The winner is awarded a plaque, a small honorarium and is given a chance to perform on a Palisades Virtuosi Series concert. Ms. Urquiola performed two selections to great applause on PV’s Oct. 22 concert, “That’s All Folk” at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. The winner of this award is chosen by the chairman of a high school music department. PV’s Board of Trustees select the chosen high school in a random process each year. Past winners include Ji-yuh Kim, clarinet, Pascack Valley HS (2007), Allison Steinberg, voice, Ridgewood High School (2008), Emily Park, piano, Hackensack High School (2009) and Emile Hsu, percussion, Northern Highlands High School (2010)
Since the age of nine, when she began her time with the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus, Alexandra Urquiola has loved music. Alexandra pursued her passion as a member of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, with which she sang at the 2008 World Choir Games in Austria, for the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium, several times in Carnegie Hall, for the hit TV Show “From the Top!”, and more. Alexandra now interns with the Young People’s Chorus, aiding them in various business and musical endeavors. Alexandra has been a student at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege for the past six years, taking classes such as theory, ear training, opera workshop, senior select chorus, and voice lessons to enhance her classical music knowledge. Alexandra is the proud President of the Bergen County Academies internationally-acclaimed 220-person concert and chamber choir, running fundraisers, competitions, and concerts. She is a member of the National, Music, Spanish, and Thespian Honors Society Chapters in her school, and is working towards her National Piano Guild Diploma and Teaching Certificate. Alexandra has won numerous awards such as the Donald Read Memorial Award, the Cappies Awards for Best Supporting Actress, the Big Apple Classic Competition First Place Winner for Vocal Soloist, the Classical Singer Competition: Hofstra University First Place Winner, the NJN Hispanic Youth Showcase Celia Cruz Scholarship Award and First Place Winner, and, most recently the George London Foundation Award. This summer, Alexandra attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and is currently a senior at the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi presents H2O – Water In All Its Forms - the third concert of their 2010-2011 season on Saturday, March 26 - 8 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. This program features a World Premiere commissioned by the Virtuosi – Undercurrents Redux by David Sampson. Other works on the program include Handel’s Water Music, Debussy’s En Bateau, Gustav Holst’s Neptune from The Planets, Aubin’s Calme de la Mer and Saint Saens’ Prelude from Le Deluge.
David Sampson has emerged as one of the truly unique voices of his generation achieving rapidly growing attention from major orchestras, soloists and ensembles. He was Composer-in-Residence for the Colonial Symphony Orchestra (1998-2007) and has had works commissioned and performed by, among many others, the National Symphony Orchestra; the Barlow Foundation for the Akron and Memphis Symphony Orchestras; the Bergen Foundation and cellist Paul Tobias and premiered with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The program will feature the World Premiere of a work commissioned by the Virtuosi – Portraits of Van Gogh by Martin A. Sedek (b.1985), an award-winning composer educated at Boston's Berklee College of Music and The Cali School of Music. Soprano Vicki Fisk and mezzo Beth Staples formed Due Voci to recapture the little known and rarely performed vocal duet repertoire and make it available to the general public through performances and recordings. Together, they bring a wide range and rich wealth of vocal and musical experience to the ensemble and have since concertized in the US and abroad. Their debut CD, The Way of Love, featured duets by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Dvorak.
The Valley Ringers were formed in 1973 with Lucille Eggers as their first handbell director. There are currently 12 members, one of whom is an original member and a 3 generation family (grandmother, mother and her 2 sons) in this mulit-generational bell choir. They are from the First Congregational Church in Park Ridge and have performed in many handbell festivals throughout the years. They are currently under the direction of Joyce Aitken.

Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi presents Myths and Legends - the first concert of their 2010-2011 season on Saturday, October 23 - 8 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The evening will also include a silent auction beginning at 7 PM and a pre concert talk at 7:15.
This program features two World Premieres commissioned by the Virtuosi – Mythic Serenade by David Gilbert and Time Unheard by James Chwalyk. Other works on the program are The Sea Nymph for bass clarinet and piano by Godfrey Schroth (who has been commissioned by the Virtuosi), Katherine Hoover’s Kokopeli for solo flute, and two of Brahms’ “Edward” Ballades for solo piano.
David Gilbert has been active as both composer and conductor. His works have been performed by major ensembles in both the U.S. and Europe. In addition to vocal, chamber, and concerto works, he is currently setting the Yeats play, The Shadowy Waters as a full-length opera.
James Chwalyk is a recent graduate of Montclair State University, where he earned degrees in Music Education and Music Theory and Composition. This program features the World Premiere of Between Worlds, a new work by Raymond Wojcik (b. 1957), commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi. Mr. Wojcik has written for a variety of mediums including works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, dance companies and film. He has been composer-in-residence at The Conductors Institute at Bard, the Cape May Music Festival (NJ), and at Kean University’s Ars Vitalis. Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi will present “The Czech Connection” - the second concert of their 2009-2010 season on Saturday, November 21 at 8:00 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The evening will begin with a pre-concert talk with the performers and commissioned composer at 7:15. There is a reception with the artists following the concert.
This program will feature the World Premiere of a newly commissioned work by Paul Moravec, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his chamber work “The Tempest” for clarinet, strings & piano. Mr. Moravec has composed over one hundred orchestral, chamber, choral, lyric, film, and electro-acoustic compositions. His music has been described as "tuneful, ebullient and wonderfully energetic" (San Francisco Chronicle), "riveting and fascinating" (NPR), and "assured, virtuosic" (Wall Street Journal). For the Palisades Virtuosi, Mr. Moravec has written “Palisades Amusement” as a tribute to the Palisades Amusement Park in New Jersey which he often visited as a child. This program will feature the World Premiere of a new work by Ryan Francis (b. 1981), commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi. His compositions have been met with audience and critical acclaim throughout the United States and Europe. His music has been variously described as “sweeping” and “exceptional” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), “compelling” (Los Angeles Times) as well as “shimmering”, “focused” and “rhythmically sharp-edged” (New York Times). Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi presents Back to the Movies – Part II - the fourth concert of their 2008-2009 season on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 8 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The evening will begin with a pre-concert talk with the performers and commissioned composer at 7:00, and will continue with a silent auction beginning at 7:30 and a post-concert meet-the-artists reception.
This program will feature the World Premiere of Statements, a new work commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi from renowned film composer Joseph Turrin, creator of scores for feature films such as A New Life, Weeds, Tough Guys Don't Dance and Little Darlings, as well as for a number of recently re-scored silent films. Also on the program are 5 Pezzi Facili for flute & piano by Nino Rota ("The Godfather" and all of Fellini's film scores), Desert Thoughts for flute, clarinet & piano by Alex Shapiro ("Horses & Champions", "The Last Job"), Seven Postcards to Old Friends for flute, clarinet [orig. viola] & piano by Robert Russell Bennett ("The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle", "Show Boat", "Shall We Dance"), Sonata for solo piano (2nd movement) by Miklos Rozsa ("Ben-Hur", The Green Berets", Dead Men don't wear Plaid"), Clarinet Sonata by Leonard Bernstein ("West Side Story", "On the Waterfront", Trouble in Tahiti") and other short works by Paul Chihara ("Shogun", "China Beach", "Crossing Delancy") and John Williams ("Star Wars", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Hook").

Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi presents Women in Music, the third concert of their 2008-2009 season on Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 3 PM at the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre of Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road in Paramus, New Jersey Special guest artist will be soprano Lorraine Ernest.
This program will feature the World Premiere of a new work commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi from Melinda Wagner, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Other works to be performed include Baroque Suite for flute, clarinet and harpsichord by Elizabeth Raum, Jennifer Higdon’s DASH for flute, clarinet and piano, Concertino for flute and piano by Cecile Chaminade, Trio by Madeleine Dring for flute, clarinet [originally oboe] and piano, Elisabetta DeGambarini’s (1731-1765) Minuet and 3 Variations from "Lessons for the Harpsichord" [1748], three songs by Amy Beach, featuring soprano Lorraine Ernest and Victoria Bond’s II - The Venus Flytrap and VII - Ragweed from "Peculiar Plants" for solo piano.

Melinda Wagner’s works have been performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Denver Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, National Orchestra of Colombia, New York New Music Ensemble, the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Contemporary Chamber Players, and Orchestra 2001. She has been honored with a Guggenheim fellowship, grants from the Illinois Arts Council and Meet The Composer, Inc., three ASCAP Young Composer awards, and resident fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. Ridgewood, NJ - The critically-acclaimed Palisades Virtuosi presents West Meets East their second concert of the 2008-2009 season on Saturday, November 15, 2008 - 8 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The evening will begin with a pre-concert talk with the performers and commissioned composer at 7:15.
This evening of Asian and Asia-related works will feature the World Premiere of a new work commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi from Sunbin Kim (winner of the ASCAP Young Composer Award). Every concert by the Palisades Virtuosi includes a work commissioned by the ensemble. Other works presented will be Empress Of The Pagodas from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite (arr. for trio by the Virtuosi), Poems of a Bright Moon by Maria Grenfell for trio, Memories of Anatolia for clarinet and piano by Godfrey Schroth, Pagodes from Debussy’s Estampes for solo piano, Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon by Jian-Zhong Wang for solo piano and Theme & Variations from Sonata for Flute & Piano by Ikuma Dan.
Palisades Virtuosi will continue its tradition of rewarding the talented youths in our community with the presentation of its 2nd annual "Young Artist Recognition Award". This year's award winner, from Ridgewood High School, will be announced and will perform at our concert - be sure to come to hear this fine young artist!

Sunbin Kim composes contemporary works for orchestra, piano, percussion and small chamber ensembles. At the age of five, prior to receiving any musical training, he composed short pieces for piano. At age 8, in his first public recital, Sunbin premiered his twenty-six piano pieces and string chamber pieces at Opus Hall in Korea. He was recognized 5 times at the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Competition and won awards in 2002 and 2003, received honorable mention in 2004 and 2005, and was a finalist in 2000. He also won first place in the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts/Hartt School Community Division’s Young Composers Competition in 2004. Guest artist Julie Schmidt will sing two songs entitled "Green" by Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy.
