"Remembrance & Rebirth"
April 10, 2010
Unitarian Society of Ridgewood
Look for new clips from our concert on Youtube!!
We had a wonderful turnout for this concert - thank you all for coming out!!  It was great to have so many composers with us also!  Thank you, Raymond, for your terrific and moving work "Between Worlds".  The audience seemed to be transported and remained in a trance for such a long time after the ending!  Brian Schober's "Wind-Space" was another mesmerizing moment and the two new Hoiby pieces were such a treat to perform.  And special thanks to Bill Vollinger for contributing not only his compositional talents but his naration and singing to the performance of his work, "The Raspberry Man".
Please visit our program notes page for more information on the pieces on our concert.

World Premiere - "Palisades Amusement" by Paul Moravec

(PV with Paul Moravec)

Our First Concert of the Season on September 26th - "When They Were Young"was extremely well-received.
Our audiences enjoyed the "mystery" aspect of not knowing who the composers were until they'd had a chance to make their best guess.  Each work was composed when the composer was age 28 or younger. (That age was determined by the age of our featured composer!)

"The Mystery" & Ken Medina

The names of the composers were displayed behind a giant question mark on an easel and then revealed after each piece to the accompaniment of a drum roll (provided by Kean University percussionist, Ken Medina). Our featured composer, Ryan Francis, was on hand to talk about his work at our PreConcert Talk, as was our featured Young Artist Recognition Award winner, Emily Park, from Hackensack High School.  Emily received an honorarium and a commemorative plaque donated by Trophy King in Teaneck NJ.  The winners in the audience were: 1st place - Ryan Francis with two composers guessed correctly. 2nd place: a 7-way tie for with each of the 7 correctly guessing one of the composers on the program.
1st Prize was a Gift Certificate for "Frame It Yourself" in Westwood, NJ donated by owners, Ken & Jackie Ernst.
2nd prize is a luncheon with the Artists of PV to be scheduled shortly.

Here we are with our featured guest composer - Joseph Turrin.

PV performed a workshop at the recent Bergen County Teen Arts Festival.  The purpose of this presentation was to introduce a composition workshop for the 2010 Teen Arts Festival.  Interested HS students may submit compositions for flute, clarinet & piano for consideration through their school music directors.  Selected compositions will be performed and critiqued at the 2010 Teen Arts Festival.

"Everything Five"
PV celebrates 5 years of survival with works related to "five"

We had a marvelous time at our Gala Fifth Birthday Party.  Our patrons enjoyed a special Pre-Concert talk with our featured composer, Matthew Halper and members of PV, perused our Silent Auction before the concert and relished meeting our composers from New American Masters Volume 2 at the party and CD signing following the concert.  We had a great time and were thrilled at the number of composers and artists present in our audience.  We'd like to thank all of our guest artists, volunteers and board members for their wonderful contribution to our celebration!

Our Thanks to Wachovia Bank's Volunteer of the Year

Wachovia Bank has selected Palisades Virtuosi volunteer Jayantha (Jay) Fernando as its Northern New Jersey Volunteer of the Year 2008 Award Program. A special ceremony was held on Monday, April 28th   in her honor. Ms. Fernando volunteers not only for Palisades Virtuosi but for six other organizations – The Center, Holy Name Hospital; Spectrum for Living; Volunteer Center of Bergen County; The Dackk’s Group, and Shelter of Our Sisters. Jay was presented with a plaque from Wachovia Bank which she gratefully accepted. Jay spoke about the volunteer work she does for these 7 organizations. Vye Messner was at the reception to represent the Virtuosi and thank Jay for all her hard work.

The Palisades Virtuosi performed a Private Fund Raiser concert in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ari Dougos in Saddle River NJ on May 4. Guests enjoyed a 1 hour performance by the Virtuosi that included such favorites as the Kummer Concertino and the Webster Carmen Fantasy as well as selections from their commissioned works. After the concert mimosas, hors d'oeuvres, dessert and coffee were served on the patio. We plan to schedule more House Concerts next season and hope to see many of our friends and patrons attending.

"GEORGE" WINS BIG!!

The COMPOSERS' GUILD 2007 Annual  Competition announces winners!
Best Instrumental Piece and Grand Prize
John Lampkin's  "George Washington Slept Here!"

The judges gave the work glowing praise: “This piece is extremely well written, and thoroughly delightful. There is a fair amount of mood changing, without the piece losing its continuity or unity. The instrumental writing is idiomatic for all three players. From my experience, to create genuine humor in music is often very difficult to achieve, but [the composer] managed to do a “tongue in cheek” almost all of the way. Congratulations on a first class piece of music!”

This has come on the heels of a rave review in the American Record Guide, which calls George “...joyous, celebratory, and slightly inebriated.”  more here.

This past June, we received two fantastic reviews in Fanfare Magazine for our "New American Masters - Volume 1".

"The stylistic and emotional range of this release is as extraordinary as is Palisades Virtuosi’s fine-tuned ensemble work...  In terms of intonation, articulation, and musical insight, Palisades Virtuosi represent the best of our current world-class standards."

"Now for some really good news—this one is a pure winner! ...feelings of relief and delight flooded my soul as each new piece proved its mettle. The sound is terrific and the performances couldn’t be better."

You can read the entire text of these reviews here.

In May we performed a story-writing program for children at elementary schools in NJ
using one of our commissioned works - "The Spice of the Program" by Ben Model.
We had a great time with the kids deciding how the different moods of the music might best describe
story actions and they created stories for their classrooms based on the music they heard us play.
